Background of the Study
Sustainability practices in retail have become increasingly important to consumers, with many opting to support businesses that prioritize environmental, social, and ethical concerns. This shift in consumer behavior has prompted retail businesses to adopt more sustainable practices, such as reducing carbon footprints, using eco-friendly materials, and promoting ethical labor practices (Ogundele, 2024). In Sokoto State, where the retail sector is primarily made up of small businesses, the adoption of sustainability practices may significantly influence consumer purchasing decisions. However, the degree to which sustainability influences these decisions remains under-researched, particularly in the context of a predominantly rural state like Sokoto.
The Nigerian retail sector has witnessed an uptick in demand for sustainable products, with increasing awareness of environmental issues and social responsibility among consumers. Retailers in Sokoto State face challenges in adopting sustainability practices due to limited resources, high costs, and low awareness about the benefits of sustainability (Abdullahi & Okereke, 2023). Despite these barriers, there is a growing trend of local consumers showing interest in sustainable products, which provides an opportunity for retailers to engage in environmentally friendly practices. Understanding the role sustainability plays in consumer decision-making within this context is essential for local businesses looking to capitalize on this growing trend.
Statement of the Problem
In Sokoto State, many retail stores continue to operate using traditional methods without incorporating sustainability into their business models. As global awareness of environmental and social issues increases, consumers are becoming more selective about the businesses they support, favoring those that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. Despite this shift, the role of sustainability practices in consumer purchasing decisions in Sokoto State is still unclear. Retailers may not fully understand the benefits of adopting sustainable practices, and consumers may not be aware of the availability of such products. This study aims to explore how sustainability practices influence consumer purchasing decisions in Sokoto State and how retailers can leverage this awareness to increase their market share.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on retail stores in Sokoto State, Nigeria, and will examine the role of sustainability in consumer purchasing decisions within this specific region. It will not address the retail sector in other parts of Nigeria, where consumer behaviors and sustainability practices may differ. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data from retailers and consumers, as well as limited access to remote areas due to infrastructural challenges.
